Friday Harbor, San Juan Island in November

This is the side of our office which faces directly into the harbor.
You can see we are literally 3 feet from the water.

In the distance is the 'main' dock
The Shell (fuel station) is the orange just above the fuel shed
Here you are looking out of our main office window
into San Juan Chanel.
This is the Washington State ferry route which lands
just to the right (see next photo)
The beige building with the green roof is
Spring Street Landing.
It houses restrooms and a wonderful Salt Water Aquarium.
That Aquarium was instaled by and is maintained by Capt. Mike Kahil.
(He used to be on staff, but is now retired)
The top of the Sea Lion is visable in the center.
The ferry landing is far right.
Here is the Friday Harbor Ferry Landing.
The long beige building is called The Cannery
(that is where the cannery was once located)
The red building is a fine restaurant below and another
whale watching operator above.
This parking lot is reserved parking for owners and
one spot for handy caped parking.

You can see gazabos. There are numerous benches for people
to sit and watch ferries and boats.
Oh, and there is also an ice cream store in the
lower level of the red building.
In the gray building which is part of San Juan Safaris office building,
is a dive shop, a whale watching operator and a marine store
that rents small boats and kayaks. Above is a good restaurant.
You know you have arrive in the right place when
you come to this on the front door.

Hang On Heron!

Pat was the one who spotted this HeronThursday right outside our office window. That is Brown Island in the background. A wintery day November 5, 2009.

It must have been blowing about 40 MPH when I took this. The photo doesn't properly show the feathers vibrating, but you can see the look and the body posture. Hang on!!

Good News for Local San Juan Islands Fishes

My mind must be on fish lately. Eveything fish seems to catch my eye. Read on. . .

On Oct. 15, a large cement tide gate was removed from the tide channel of Lopez Island’s Shoal Bay lagoon.

The derelict tide gate structure was restricting the flow of water in and out of the lagoon, obstructing fish passage at low tide and causing elevated summertime temperatures within the lagoon. Shoal Bay has a rich nearshore marine environment with forage fish spawning beaches, eelgrass, shellfish beds, a sand spit and a coastal lagoon.

Pacific herring, surf smelt and multiple species of out-migrating juvenile salmon utilize the project area. The restoration project, will improve water quality and fish passage conditions at the lagoon.

The Fish You Eat and Their Future

I know your tired of hearing about declining fish populations.
But please, give this a listen.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=120013107
This interview sets the fish issues crystal clear in a way that anyone can understand.

Fish are good for you. Fish are good for our Southern Resident Orca Whales. Fish do lots more than just feed us.
Fish are good to have in our oceans - for more than just us and orca whales.
Give it a listen.
Colleen
